Modernizing an Older Screen Porch Without Losing Its Character

This porch already had good bones and a beautiful setting.

Years of added framing and older screen details had simply made the space feel heavier, darker, and more cluttered than it needed to be.

    Focus

    Cleaner, More Open Design

An Older Porch With Too Much Going On

The screen porch dated back to roughly the late 1990s or early 2000s.

Over time, additional two-by-four framing had been added around the screens. Older screen clips collected leaves and debris, lattice overhead reduced natural light, and some of the existing posts had begun to warp.

Traditional wood pickets along the lower portion also added more visual weight.

    Cleaning Up the Structure

Johansson Builders removed the unnecessary framing and lattice, repaired and refinished areas that needed attention, and replaced the old screen arrangement with a cleaner powder-coated aluminum system.

The lower wood pickets were replaced with black cable railing to preserve safety while opening the view.

Letting the Porch and Setting Speak for Themselves

The renovation did not need to compete with the existing architecture.

The goal was to remove the visual clutter so the vaulted wood ceiling, fireplace, surrounding greenery, and open views could become the focus again.

The finished porch feels lighter, cleaner, and more intentional without losing the character that made the original space worth keeping.

The Difference Is in What Gets Simplified

The cleaner screen framing, more open railing, repaired existing elements, and reduced visual clutter allow the original porch architecture to stand out again.
