When Hurricane Helene removed trees that had provided natural shade, this Anderson backyard suddenly became much hotter and more exposed.
Mosquitoes added another reason the homeowners were not getting as much use from the space as they wanted.

Starting With Pavers and an Open Backyard
There was no existing porch structure.
The area consisted primarily of pavers beside the home.
To create a proper foundation for the new room, a concrete slab was poured first. That gave Johansson Builders the stable surface needed for the porch structure.
Building Shade and Bug Protection Into the Space
A powder-coated aluminum structure was built over the new slab, topped with insulated structural roof panels.
The roof creates permanent shade while helping reduce the heat that can radiate through simpler outdoor roof systems.
Screens were then installed around the room to provide airflow while reducing mosquito and insect problems.
The homeowners chose a traditional screen porch rather than an Eze-Breeze enclosure, which was the right fit for how they planned to use the space.
Making It Feel Like a Room
A shiplap-style accent wall adds a finished residential detail to the interior.
Once furnished, the porch has room for seating, dining, cabinets, and a large television.
It is still clearly an outdoor space, but it now functions much more like a room the family can actually use.
A Completely New Part of the Home
This project did not begin with a porch that needed renovation.
It began with pavers, full sun, and a backyard that had become less comfortable after the storm.
The finished screen porch created an entirely new protected area roughly 20 feet long and 12 feet deep, adding meaningful usable space without requiring a conventional interior addition.
