    A Storm Damaged Deck Rebuilt With Better Details

    When Hurricane Helene damaged this deck, the project was not limited to replacing what could be seen from the surface.

    Assessing More Than the Visible Damage

    A tree had partially fallen onto the house during Hurricane Helene and damaged the deck railing.

    Once the project began, there were also small areas of rot that needed attention. Those damaged areas were repaired rather than being covered up and left behind.

    Rebuilding for Better Long Term Performance

    The deck received new higher-grade wood decking and a fresh stained finish.

    Joist tape was added over the framing to provide additional protection from moisture, and damaged structural pieces were replaced where needed.

    The original traditional picket railing was replaced with hog-wire infill, creating a more open view into the wooded surroundings.

    Improving What Was Already There

    Not every outdoor project requires starting over.

    In this case, the underlying deck was worth keeping. The better solution was to repair the areas that needed attention, protect the structure, replace the worn surfaces, and improve the finished look.

    That is part of thoughtful renovation: knowing what should stay and what should change.

    A More Open Finished View

    Replacing the older wood pickets with hog-wire railing changed more than the appearance of the deck.

    The more open pattern reduces the visual barrier around the perimeter and keeps the surrounding wooded property more connected to the space.
