A Large Covered Porch Designed to Be Part of Everyday Life

For this new home, the porch was not treated as leftover outdoor space.

The homeowners wanted a substantial covered area where they could sit, gather, and enjoy the property as part of everyday life.

Building the Outdoor Space With the Home in Mind

This was new construction, so Johansson Builders was able to build the porch and stair system without working around an older deck.

The homeowner cared about the quality of a structure that would be used and seen every day.

The result is a long covered porch that wraps along the home and creates a large amount of usable outdoor space.

    Keeping the View Open

Hog-wire railing was used instead of a heavier traditional picket pattern.

That choice provides the protection a raised porch needs while keeping the railing visually open so the surrounding property remains part of the experience.

A full stair system connects the elevated porch with the yard below.

A Place to Stay Outside Longer

The size of this project is difficult to appreciate from a single photograph.

The porch extends for a substantial distance along the home, with enough room for multiple seating areas, plants, and everyday use without feeling crowded.

Because it is covered, the homeowners can use the space through a wider range of weather conditions than an uncovered deck.

Built at a Scale That Changes How the Home Is Used

This is more than a small landing outside a door.

The covered porch creates a substantial outdoor area where people can sit together, spread out, and enjoy the surrounding property while remaining connected to the home.
