Rebuilding a Poorly Laid Out Deck Around How the Homeowners Actually Live
The original deck had been built in a way that sacrificed much of its usable space.
Instead of continuing to work around a poor layout, the better solution was to start over and build the deck correctly.

Composite Deck Rebuild
Better Layout & Everyday Use
The Problem Was the Layout, Not Just the Surface
The previous deck included steps that cut through the main usable area.
Furniture placement was difficult, movement through the space felt awkward, and the configuration created unnecessary trip hazards.
Previous surface improvements had not addressed the underlying problem.
This was not a deck that needed another cosmetic update. It needed a better plan.

Before and After: Fixing the Layout

Before: Steps divided the deck and took away much of the space that should have been available for seating and everyday use.

After: The rebuilt deck sits at the proper level with the home, creating one open surface directly outside the kitchen.
Starting From the Structure Up
Johansson Builders removed the existing deck and rebuilt the structure from the ground up.
The new deck was raised to meet the existing kitchen doors at the correct height. Eliminating unnecessary steps within the deck created a cleaner transition from the house and made the entire surface more usable.
TimberTech composite decking was used for the finished surface, paired with powder-coated aluminum railing.

An Outdoor Extension of the Kitchen
The deck sits directly outside the kitchen.
With the awkward interior steps gone, the transition from inside to outside is simple. Open the doors and the deck becomes another place to sit, eat, entertain, or spend time outdoors.
That relationship with the kitchen is what makes the improved layout matter.
The project is not simply newer. It works better.

Considering a Composite Deck?
Composite decking can provide a lower-upkeep outdoor surface that holds its appearance well in South Carolina weather and works especially well when the entire layout is planned correctly from the beginning.
